The Ministry of Housing and Water is keen on developing a new housing scheme at Moleson Creek, Region Six (East Berbice- Corentyne), to cater to the Guyanese living in Suriname who want to return home.

Subject Minister Collin Croal made the announcement on Monday during an outreach event in the region.  There, Minister Croal said several Guyanese living in Suriname have indicated an interest in returning home.

So, he highlighted, “We are looking at an area in Moleson Creek to develop as part of our work programme.”

Berbicians seeking housing solutions should also be able to live there.

Further, Minister Croal noted that the area is also being developed because of an anticipated increase in activity with the new Corentyne River bridge that will connect Guyana and Suriname.

The Corentyne River Bridge will be constructed via a Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement and according to the Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Maintain model (DBFOM). This means that the successful contractor of the joint venture will be responsible for its final design, construction, financing, operation, and maintenance.

The China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), which worked on the expansion of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), is among five companies shortlisted to build the Corentyne Bridge.

The final cost will be determined by what the bidder is proposing in terms of the bridge’s capacity. But WSP has pegged the estimated total cost at US$611 million. The actual construction cost is estimated at just under US$500 million.
