Nineteen-year-old Matthew Sylvain, of Melanie, East Coast Demerara was on Tuesday remanded for armed robbery while also facing charges related to escaping lawful custody.
The teen appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel-Isaacs Marcus.
It is alleged that on July 05, at Lamaha Pak, Georgetown, while being in the company of another and armed with a handgun, Sylvain robbed Colin Hooper of one gold chain valued at $1.7 million and a gold band valued at $300,000.
The defendant pleaded not guilty.
It is also alleged that on July 05, at Lamaha Park, Georgetown, while being in the company of another and with a handgun, Sylvain robbed Marlon Austin of one Iphone 13 Pro max valued at $300,000, one gold chain with diamond pendants valued at $210,000 and two gold rings valued at $200,000.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the second charge.
It is further alleged that on July 08, while in custody at the Ruimveldt Police Station, the defendant escaped.
He pleaded guilty with explanation and told the court that he is very sorry for escaping from custody but he has no knowledge of the robbery he is being accused of.
The Police prosecutor objected to bail and said one of the articles was recovered on the Sylvain’s person.
Bail was refused and the matter adjourned to August 02.
