Spinners Aryan Persaud and Jonathan Rampersaud combined for all 10 second-innings wickets to lead Guyana Under-19 team to a commanding 189-run win over the Windward Islands in the Cricket West Indies Rising Stars Under-19 Three-Day competition on Saturday at the Arnos Vale Playing Field in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Set a target of 249 for an outright win, Windward Islands crumbled to 59 all out from 31.5 overs, with left-arm spinner Persaud returning outstanding figures of 7-6 from 10.5 overs, six of which were maidens.
Off-spinner Rampersaud supported well with 3-28 from 11 overs to add to his first innings haul of 5-18, ending the match with figures of 8-46.
Only opener S. Pascal got going for Windward Islands with 19.
After a low-scoring first innings in which Guyana made 69 and Windward Islands responded with 86, the Guyanese batsmen rose to the occasion second time around, batting 97 overs and declaring on 265-9.
Skipper Mavindra Dindyal led the way with a fine 77 from 131 balls (6x4s, 2x6s), Shamar Yearwood made 64 off 144 (2x4s, 2x6s) and Zeynul Ramsammy ended on 59 not out off 141 balls (3x4s, 1×6).
T. Edwards claimed 6-93 to add to his first innings figures of 5-4.
This is Guyana’s first victory of the Three-Day competition, after they suffered an 80-run loss to Barbados in the opening round earlier this week at Park Hill.
They next play Trinidad and Tobago at Sion Hill from July 25-27.
