Body of ‘known alcoholic’ found floating in Hope canal

The body of Yashpaul Thomas, called ‘Ashkay’, a 26-year-old  Labourer of Hope Lowlands, East Coast Demerara, was found afloat in a canal Tuesday morning.

A statement from Police Headquarters described the man as “a known alcoholic.”

He lived with his 39-year-old reputed wife.

According to the woman, Thomas left home for work on Sunday last but never returned home. Checks were made around the area for him, but he was not located.

On Tuesday, at about 08:20 hrs, the woman went to the Cove and John Police Station to lodge a missing person report when she received information that the body of a male was found afloat in a canal at Hope Lowlands.

She went to the said area and identified the body as her reputed husband. The body was examined, and no marks of violence were seen. The body was escorted to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Investigations are in progress.
