Michael McKenzie, 33, of Meadow Bank, Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara died Thursday evening after being involved in an accident along Broad Street, Georgetown.

A statement from Police Headquarters noted that the accident occurred at about 19:30 hrs and involved motorcar #PAC 4964, owned and driven by Leando Retimiah, a 31-year-old from Herstelling, East Bank Demerara.

McKenzie was riding a bicycle at the time.

Police said the car was proceeding in the southern drive lane of Broad Street, in the vicinity of High Street, at a fast rate while the McKenzie was proceeding east on the southern drive lane of Broad Street.

Retimiah told investigators he was driving between 60-70 kmph when he observed McKenzie. He applied brakes and swerved to avoid a collision, but the right side front of his motor car collided with the pedal cyclist.

As a result of the collision, McKenzie was flung into the air, landed on the front windscreen of the motor car and fell onto the road surface, where he received injuries about his body.

He was picked up in an unconscious condition by the driver (Retimiah) and transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty and pronounced dead on arrival. His body is at the GPHC’s mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
