Ranks of the Joint Services on Saturday carried out a raid at the New Amsterdam prison during which a quantity of contraband items including 282 grammes of narcotics were found and seized.
Police Headquarters reported that the raid was conducted between 05:40 hrs and 08:00 hrs.
Among the other items recovered were nine improvised weapons, nine cellphones, one SIM card, a quantity of cigarettes, 11 lighters, one smoking utensil, four metal spoons, one bucket fermented wine and our bottles of wine.
The issue of contraband into the prison system is a long standing one.
In the past prison officers as well as police ranks were charged for smuggling contraband into the prisons.
