Two arrested as Police probe Olato Sam murder; one suspect had a gun

Police investigators have arrested two persons as they continue to probe the murder of former Chief Education Officer, Olato Sam who was fatally struck with a stray bullet at the Plaisance Railway Embankment (Line Top), East Coast Demerara (ECD) during the wee hours of Friday.

The News Room was reliably informed that the suspects in custody were the two men who were involved in a fight, opposite the bar at which Sam and three friends were liming.

At the time of his arrest, one of the suspects allegedly had a gun in his possession.

Both men are residents of Plaisance, ECD and are said to be assisting with the investigation.

The shooting unfolded around 00:30hrs.

Reports reaching the News Room revealed that Sam, 53, of South Ruimveldt Park Georgetown, went to the Gold Rush Bar located at Plaisance Railway Embankment, ECD, where he met with three of his friends.

Whilst there, they limed outside the bar, which is situated on the roadside of the embankment, when a fight broke out between the two suspects opposite the bar.

Shortly after two loud explosions which sounded like gun shots were heard coming from their direction and Sam fell to the ground.

He was assisted by his friends who took him to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Sam’s body was examined and a gunshot wound was seen to his chest.

Investigations are ongoing.

    This is absolutely tragic. Likely a sharp lawyer will get them off.

    Bring back hanging for certain offenses. And yes it does work as a deterrent!
