Labourer charged for murder of Olato Sam

Twenty-two-year-old Joshua Martin Archer called “Joshie” was on Monday remanded to prison after he was charged with the murder of Education Specialist Olato Sam.

Archer appeared before Magistrate Rochelle Liverpool at the Sparandaam Magistrates’ Court One.

He was not required to plead to the indictable charge.

The matter was adjourned to September 26 for disclosure of statements.

Sam, a former Chief Education Officer, was killed at around 00:30 hrs on August 4.

At the time, Sam, 53, of South Ruimveldt Park Georgetown, was liming at the Gold Rush Bar with three of his friends.

Archer also has pending matters of illegal possession of firearm and ammunition and possession of narcotics for trafficking.

The trial into those matters commenced and continues on August 24.

The murder charge was laid against Archer following his discharge from the hospital where he was nursing a gunshot wound to his thigh.

Archer was shot on August 5 after he allegedly tried to open fire on ranks who were conducting surveillance in the area.

Following the incident, the ranks returned to the area and recovered a .32 pistol, without a serial number, and two rounds in the bushes where he was shot.
