BREAKING: Mother, son burnt to death as Essequibo house goes up in flames

A woman and her eldest son died in the wee hours of Tuesday after fire engulfed their Good Hope, Region Two (Pomeroon – Supenaam) house.

Dead are Sasha La Cruz and her son, Ilyas Wilson.

Neighbours say they were awakened by screams of “fire, fire” at about 04:00 hrs but by the time they responded, it was too late to save the woman and her son.

Their screams subsided as firefighters struggled to extinguish the blaze and once that was accomplished, the charred remains of the mother and her son were discovered in the rubble.

The four outer walls were the only thing left standing after the fire was extinguished at the Good Hope, Essequibo Coast property.

The boy’s grandmother, Savitri Wilson was inconsolable after learning of the tragic event.

A neighbour was able to briefly relate what occurred.

“I was awaken by shouts and it was the big son but I dint get up right away.

“Then after I heard him shouting fire and when I look I see fire in the house, fire so much.

The deaths of the woman and her son has sent shockwaves through the community.

“I keep walking up and down, like I didn’t know what to do and then I run downstairs and shout for neigbhours and after people start to come,” Arlene Burnett told the News Room.

Police and fire investigators are currently at the scene carrying out their investigations. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
