Efforts are underway to digitise many of the services conducted at local courts and Information Technology Consultant, Alex Graham says some payments can be made online.

Graham, who spoke at the commissioning ceremony of the new Vigilance Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, said his company is working with the local judiciary to digitise many of the local court processes and services.

Already, digital notice boards (called e-notice boards) are in place at courts in Georgetown and around the country.

The most recent digital update to the system is that maintenance payments can now be made via Mobile Money Guyana (MMG), an online payment platform.

Maintenance includes child support or payments made to one’s spouse. Eventually, the system will be expanded so that bail, fines and other payments can be made online. Additionally, other online platforms will be used.

“In the future, those payments could be made from anywhere,” Graham said.

Aside from payments, Graham noted that court orders and records are also being digitised.

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, SC on Wednesday noted that the government is focusing on digitising public services. New laws have already been passed to facilitate this shift.
