Welder jailed for 13 weeks, fined $5M for ganja found in backpack


Richey Sewadhan, 21, was on Friday sentenced to 13 weeks imprisonment and fined $5M after he was found guilty of narcotics possession.
The sentence was handed down by Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Cove and John Magistrate’s Court following the completion of a trial.
Sewadhan, a welder of Berbice, Region Six, was arrested on July 29, 2021 following the discovery of 28 pounds of cannabis in a vehicle in which he was travelling.
He was found guilty two years after he was found with the narcotics.
The interception was made at Paradise Village, East Coast Demerara, by ranks of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), who were acting on information received.
