Young Guyanese chess player Kataleya Sam was on Wednesday honoured by the Better Hope/La Bonne Intention (LBI) Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) for her performance in the recently concluded XIV CAC Youth Chess Festival in Trinidad.
The 10-year-old impressively finished third in the Under-10 Female category, securing a conditional Women’s Candidate Master (WCM) title.
This remarkable achievement of a WCM awaits official confirmation when she achieves an international rating of 1800 or higher.
Sam, who resides within the NDC boundaries, was the youngest player to represent Guyana at the event. In recognition of her achievement at the Festival, the NDC presented a plaque to the young lady.
Chairman of the NDC Zaman Shaw expressed elation at the performance of Sam, expressing delight on behalf of the NDC and its Councillors, and by extension all Guyanese who love chess and sport in general.
He urged the youth to stay focused on her game as well as her academics.
In brief conversation with the NDC Chairman, Sam shared that she loves art and drawing, and she is looking forward to the new school term, starting Monday.
