Battle heating up in ECPFA Senior League with playoff spots at stake

In Round Seven of the Essequibo Coast/Pomeroon Football Association (ECPFA) Senior League, football enthusiasts witnessed intense battles and playoff implications coming to the fore.

Charity Football Club faced off against Henrietta United Football Club, resulting in a 1-1 draw, while Mainstay Goalstar and Queenstown United Football Club, the top two teams in the league, also played to a thrilling 1-1 stalemate.

Additionally, Dartmouth Dominators Football Club secured a walkover against Tapakuma Football Club.

In the opening match of the round, Charity FC was in a must-win situation as they aimed to secure their spot in the playoffs.

The match began with high stakes, and in the 10th minute, Makhaya Thomas of Charity FC found the back of the net, giving his team a crucial lead.

The hopes of winning and qualifying for the playoffs were alive, with Charity holding a one-goal advantage going into the second half.

However, Henrietta United FC had other plans. In the 60th minute, Aldrion Austin scored an equaliser, putting them back in contention.

Despite both teams’ best efforts, no more goals were scored, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

The stalemate meant that Charity FC would have to wait for the final round of matches to know their playoff fate.

The second match of the round featured the league’s top two teams, Mainstay Goalstar FC and Queenstown United FC.

Both teams have already secured their spots in the playoffs, and the match was a test of their skills and strategies.

The match was marked by intense defensive play, with neither team able to break the deadlock until the 75thminute when the league’s top scorer, Randy De Jonge of Mainstay Goalstar, made the difference by netting a penalty.

This goal not only put Mainstay Goalstar in the lead, but also ended Queenstown United FC’s goalkeeper, Arsenio Alves’ clean sheet streak since his return to league football.

However, Queenstown United FC showed their resilience. In the 80th minute, their midfielder, Romario Walcott, scored a brilliant goal, securing a draw for his team and continuing their unbeaten run in the league.

With Round Seven completed, the focus now shifts to the final round of matches, where Henrietta United FC will face Mainstay Goalstar FC, and Queenstown United FC will take on Dartmouth Dominators Football Club.

These critical matches will be played on September 9 at Multi Ground, and football fans can expect even more excitement and drama as the teams battle for playoff positions and glory in the ECPFA Senior League.
