    16 sugar workers among 20 persons charged for unlawful acts during protest

    Twenty persons, including 16 sugar workers, were arrested in Berbice and charged on Tuesday with several offences, ranging from obstruction of traffic to unlawful assembly, malicious damage to property, and terrorism.

    Those charged are:

    1. Kheron Bisoondyal, a 35-year-old Cane Harvester of Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice
    2. Fizal Kowlessar, a 28-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 34 East Canefield, East Canje, Berbice
    3. Roopnarine Sukha, a 46-year-old Cane Harvester of East Canefield, East Canje, Berbice
    4. Lance Bostswain, a 35-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 8 Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice
    5. Mohan Premchand, a 37-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 33 Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice
    6. Joseph Mc Pherson, a 49-year-old Cane Harvester of Goed Bananen Land, East Canje, Berbice
    7. Narinedatt Khemraj, a 52-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 156 East Canje, Berbice.
    8. Satesh Jagnarine, a 52-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 122 East Canefield, East Canje, Berbice
    9. Marlon Durant, a 51-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 27 Adelphi Village, East Canje, Berbice
    10. Dennis Kippy, a 37-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 56 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice
    11. Shawn Bess, a 29-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 108 Adelphi Village, East Canje, Berbice
    12. Nigel Gangadin, a 27-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 26 Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice
    13. Damon Jagnarine, a 56-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 110 East Canefield, East Canje, Berbice
    14. Khemraj Balkarran, a 27-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 890 East Canefield, East Canje, Berbice
    15. Waquar Baksh, a 31-year-old Labourer of Lot 12 Reliance Settlement, East Canje, Berbice
    16. Bhojnarine Ramkisson, a 38-year-old Labourer of Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice
    17. Satesh Sanichara, a 44-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 10 Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice
    18. Lance Boason, a 36-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 8 Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice
    19. Ratan Singh, a 24-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 18 Goed Bananen Land, East Canje, Berbice
    20. George Southwell, a 31-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 1 Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice

    They were all arrested on Monday.

    Those charged for malicious damage to property were placed on $ 20,000 bail each and for act of terrorism, they were all placed on $30,000 bail each.

    Those charged were represented by Attorneys-at-Law Khemraj Ramjattan, Roysdale Forde, Darren Wade and Charlyn Artiga.

    They appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate R. Singh.

    They all pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the summary charge and were not required to plea for the Indictable charges.

    The matter was adjourned to October 16, 2023 for report.
