Two years jail for teen found with illegal gun

Shakel Thomas, the 18-year-old handyman from Laing Avenue, Georgetown who was arrested at the weekend with an illegal gun was on Tuesday charged and sentenced to two years imprisonment.

Thomas was arrested at around 03:49hrs Sunday after ranks on a mobile patrol in Region Three found him with the firearm.

He appeared at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul and pleaded guilty to the charge.

The Police ranks, acting on information, went to Nicola Sports Bar at Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo where they conducted a search on Thomas and a firearm was found in his pants pocket.

The ranks took possession of the firearm; the barrel had no ammunition in it.

The teen was told of the allegation, cautioned, arrested, and escorted to the Leonora Police Station with the firearm.
