Hammer, crowbar found next to woman’s burnt remains; Cops hunting suspect with mental illness
Police are on the hunt for a man known as ‘Rodwell’ in connection with the murder of 29-year-old Shannen Obermullah-Mohamed, whose charred remains were found outside a house at Parika, East Bank Essequibo.
Police Headquarters reported that Mohamed’s burnt skull and torso were found among debris at the front of an incomplete, flat concrete structure.
The cops were alerted at about 22:10 hrs on Tuesday by an anonymous caller and upon arrival, the ranks found a sledgehammer and crowbar near the burnt remains.
Police received information from a neighbour that at around 10:00 hrs, she observed ‘Rodwell’ burning wood and other materials in the yard, but she paid him no mind.
The News Room earlier reported that Mohamed was constructing her house at Parika and on Tuesday morning at around 09:00 hrs, she picked up the construction worker (Rodwell) and headed to the area to check on the progress.
During the day, family members tried contacting her, but all calls went unanswered, and her whereabouts were unknown.
On Tuesday night, family members decided to venture down to the back of the yard where the house is being constructed and observed a fire. They also saw ‘Rodwell’ walking away, heading towards the end of the yard and disappearing in the darkness.
According to the Police, the family members used buckets of water from a nearby pipe to extinguish the fire. After this, they observed what appeared to be a human skull among the debris. As a result, the Police were summoned.
It was also brought to the attention of the ranks that ‘Rodwell’ suffers from a mental illness and is known to the family.
“Despite his mental condition, they said he does quality construction for the family, and his fees are reasonable,” the Police reported.
The charred remains of the body were later escorted to Ezekiel Funeral Home, awaiting DNA testing to determine identity. The Police have not arrested anyone as yet.
