Days after a man was found dead in the vicinity of a mall at Parika, East Bank Essequibo, two labourers were on Thursday charged with murder.

The victim has been identified as 47-year-old Ravi Ramrattan called ‘Socks’.

Khemraj Persaud called ‘Kato’, a 20-year-old labourer of Parika Façade and Ganguly Rambarran, a 24-year-old labourer of Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.

They were jointly charged with the indictable offence which occurred on September 2, 2023 and were not required to plea. They were remanded to prison and are scheduled to appear in court again on October 19, 2023.

Ramrattan was found lying on his back on Saturday in the vicinity of Lotus Mall at Parika; he was wearing a long black pants, a black jersey, and a reddish bath towel wrapped around the jersey.

When the body was examined, chop wounds were seen and a bedsheet with what appeared to be blood was found next to the man.

Government Pathologist Dr Nehal Singh, who conducted the post-mortem examination, determined the cause of death as ‘multiple incise wounds’.

The two men were arrested on September 4.
