Thieves on Wednesday morning allegedly broke into the Region Six Regional Democratic Council (RDC) office and carted off with an undisclosed amount of cash after beating one of the security guards on duty.

Police Headquarters confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the incident which occurred around 03:10 hrs.

The RDC building is situated at Vryman’s Erven in New Amsterdam, Berbice.

At the time of the robbery, four security guards were on duty.

One of the guards, Suresh Sooknanan, 60, who was in a guard hut situated on the eastern side of the compound was bound and beaten.

According to a Police report, Sooknanan said four unidentifiable men entered the compound from the eastern fence and dealt him a lash to his forehead.

“The men also tied his hands behind his back, duct-taped his mouth and left him in the hut,” Police said.

Sooknanan then made his way to the front of the compound where he informed his colleagues what transpired.

Those colleagues untied him and the matter was reported to the Police. Sooknanan was later escorted to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital to seek medical attention.

Upon checking the building, Police said it was discovered that two windows from the department were open.

“Entry was seen to a door to the southern side of the building, where access was gained into the building and inside a room where an undisclosed amount of cash was kept. The room had an access door with reinforced grill works (internally), which was broken off, and the undisclosed amount of cash was reported missing,” the Police noted.

The cash which was stolen was kept in the Accounts Department of the building. Investigators have since interviewed the RDC Chairman and his staff.

As the probe continues, Police said security cameras around the building are being reviewed.
