Wanted man nabbed with ganja says he was selling it to support his family

A man wanted for theft was on Thursday arrested outside the Lambada Sports Bar, at Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD) after 34 grammes of cannabis was found in his possession.

Ishmael Junior, 29, of Bagotstown, EBD was arrested by Police ranks on mobile patrol duties in the Providence Station district, a statement from the Guyana Police Force said.

He told the Police he intended to sell the cannabis to support his family.

“Officer, I just buy an ounce weed fa $5000 because I is a chain smoker and I just decide fa sell a couple pack because I got me children dem fa look after,” Junior is quoted by Police headquarters as saying.

According to the Police statement, the man was wanted in relation to a larceny report and on Thursday, ranks recognised him while he was standing in the vicinity of the sports bar.

They approached him and after he identified himself, one of the officers told him that he was wanted by the Police in relation to an ongoing investigation. They then requested a search and he obliged.

A bulky black plastic bag was found in the pockets on the left side of his pants. Upon further examination, several small transparent Ziploc plastic bags containing a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis were found.

The man was arrested and escorted to the Providence Police Station, EBD where the suspected cannabis was weighed in his presence and amounted to 34 grammes.

He is currently in custody pending further investigation and charges.
