Ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) Traffic Department made a total of 2,247 traffic cases last week, 652 of which were for speeding.

Another 55 is in connection with driving under the influence.

The statistics which were released by the GPF on Monday are for the period of September 10 to 16.

According to the Police, all persons were charged.

And while convictions were obtained for some of the charges, Police said fines ranging from $60,000 to $200,000 were imposed.

The cases were made during operations which were conducted across all the regional police divisions as part of the force’s effort to tackle the rise in road accidents and at the same time ensure safer roads for all.

In addition to the increase in enforcement, the Police said traffic ranks have also been conducting awareness sessions at schools, liquor restaurants and bars, bus parks and markets to sensitize citizens on the importance of the safe use of the roads.

“Pedestrians are forewarned not to use the regulation crossing without observing the road, as ignorance is not an excuse,” the Police said.

The force is therefore reminding motorists to use the roadways with “due care and caution”.

Further, the Police are encouraging bar owners to resist the ‘sale for profit’ and practice responsible business ethics, which can save lives.
