Within the first 20 days of September 2023,  a 12 per cent increase in passenger arrivals were recorded at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), when compared to last year.

This disclosure was made by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the CJIA, Ramesh Ghir, who told the News Room that the “upsurge” in the numbers is mainly due to persons visiting the country for the Cricket Carnival events.

According to Ghir, it is estimated that approximately 36,000 passengers will arrive through the country’s main port of entry by the end of September.

The number, he said will surpass the “record breaking” arrivals in 2022.

“This tremendous influx of visitors is a testament to the overwhelming success of the Cricket Carnival, a remarkable event conceptualized by His Excellency President Mohamed Irfaan Ali,” Ghir told the News Room.

He added, “Cricket Carnival has become a beacon of excitement, drawing visitors from far and wide to experience the exhilarating atmosphere and festivities that Guyana has to offer. The allure of this grand celebration has undoubtedly left a profound impact on those who have had the privilege of being a part of it”.

Passengers arriving at the CJIA earlier in September.

In early August 2023, the CJIA revealed that it had processed 50,000 more passengers in 2023 compared to last year.

The 405,000 passengers processed in 2023 is 14% higher than in 2022, the airport CEO said.

Ghir further noted that as the country continues to witness the growth of the annual Cricket Carnival events, it is clear that Guyana has been established as a “premier” destination for cricket enthusiasts as well as festival-goers.

“The success of this event not only showcases the rich cultural heritage of Guyana but also highlights the warmth and hospitality of its people,” Ghir said.

With the majority of the events already wrapped up, the highly anticipated Super Concert which features four international super stars including Sean Paul, Machel Montano and Shenseea is scheduled to take place on Saturday night at the National Stadium.

This will be followed by the final match of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) between the Guyana Amazon Warriors and the Trinbago Knight Riders on Sunday.

Ghir, that may not be true with everyone visiting the country during the “bat and ball game”, is or will be going to watch the little boys play their Bat and Ball. It is not Test Cricket standard, by any means… just a money making event…with cricket in the real sense, not on their minds.
