Barnwell taxi driver found with illegal gun; says it’s for personal protection

Police on Saturday arrested a 27-year-old taxi driver following the discovery of an unlicensed firearm and several rounds of ammunition at his Barnwell, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) house.

Police Headquarters, in a statement, said the discovery was made around 14:00hrs.

The gun was hidden in a wardrobe in the suspect’s bedroom.

According to a Police report, ranks acting on information received went to the suspect’s house during which the unlicensed 9mm firearm and two matching rounds was unearthed.

Upon being cautioned, the Police said the suspect reportedly told the ranks “I just get it deh fuh if any bandit come in me house”.

He was arrested and taken to the Parika Police Station where he was placed in custody pending charges.

The illegal firearm and ammunition was lodged.
