Mason found guilty of raping girl; co- accused to face new trial

Nelroy Barry called “Cock” was remanded to prison to await sentence after he was found guilty of raping a 15-year-old girl three years ago.

Barry and his co-accused Calvin Reid, called “Callo” are both masons from Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara. They were on trial before Justice Jo Ann Barlow, who is presiding in the Sexual Offences Court.

The two men are accused o raping the girl in the county of Demerara on January 7, 2020.

A 12-member jury found Barry guilty of the crime but were unable to arrive at a verdict for Reid.

As such, Justice Barlow ordered that Reid be retried at the next practical sitting of the Demerara Assizes.

Barry was remanded to prison until October 26 for sentencing.

The prosecution had contended that on the date in question, the teen was taken to Nelroy’s home, where he raped her.

It is further alleged that Reid, who was also the home, raped the teen. Nelroy was accused of raping the girl a second tome before sending her home.

The matter was reported to the Police and both men were arrested and charged.

Barry was represented by Attorney-at-Law Tamieka Clarke while Attorney-at-Law Teriq Mohammed represented Reid.

Melroy is no stranger to the courts. In 2021, he was charged for allegedly attempting to murder his ex-girlfriend.

In 2010, while in custody at the Cove and John Police Station lockups for an allegation of rape, the accused had allegedly ingested a poisonous substance.

He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he received treatment.
