The Guyana Police Force is investigating an incident at a daycare in Providence, East Bank Demerara which left an 11-month-old baby boy with a broken left leg.

Commander of Regional Division 4B, Krishna Ramana told the News Room that the file is being prepared for transfer to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

The News Room understands that the incident occurred two weeks ago – two months after the toddler started attending the day care.

His family is seeking answers and hopes that the matter will be investigated thoroughly by the authorities.

“I take him day care because I am working and I work shifts, and when I work day shift, I would take him there and my aunt when she gets home, she will pick him up,” the child’s mother, Bibi Azeez told the News Room.

Azeez said she received a telephone call from the owner of the day care on September 25 informing her that her son was injured in the leg and that she should pick him up.

“When I got there, he was curled up in a ball and he was not crying or moving, like when you have unbearable pain and don’t know what to do,” the distraught mother explained.

She said he already had a high temperature and his leg was swollen and red.

The baby boy was rushed to the Dr Balwant Singh’s Hospital in Georgetown and his pediatrician confirmed that his leg was broken and that he would need to be in a cast for approximately eight weeks.

He is also required to do weekly checkups.

According to the mother, her son was there with another child and the owner of the day care at the time of the incident.

When the mother of the other child came to pick him up, the owner left Azeez’s son in the vicinity of the doorway.

It is alleged that the older brother of the other child pushed the grilled door when it hit Azeez’s son.

“My son was standing there, she [the owner] turned her back to get the other baby and the parent open the grill door, and [her older son] pushed the grill door and it slammed into my baby’s left leg, causing it to break, this is what she said to me, I don’t know how true it is,” Azeez explained.

Azeez is now left to cover the medical expenses of her son and had to take time off of work to look after him for the eight-week period.

The News Room understands that the Childcare and Protection Agency also launched an investigation into the incident.

11 month old baby walking/creeping to the door ?
That baby should have been in a crib, not with older children.
