Perry Budhram, a miner from Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara (WCD), died on Saturday after he was chopped during a fight at Granny Landing, Omai Backdam, Siparuni in Region Eight.

Police Headquarters reported that Budhram was involved in an altercation with a man only identified as ‘Saw Man’ so far.

It was noted that Budhram and two co-workers from the Chunilall Babulall Mining Company, McDavid Barran and Navin Murray, left their base camp and went to Granny Landing where they were imbibing.

At about 15:00 hrs, Budhram left with a woman. About an hour later, the co-workers decided to return to their camp and went looking for Budhram. He, however, told his co-workers he was not returning yet.

Later that afternoon, Lincoln Samson, a 57-year-old businessman of Granny Landing, saw Budhram run behind his shop in a bending position. Samson immediately checked on Budhram and saw wounds on each of his arms.

Samson reportedly said Budhram told him that a man had chopped him. And Samson then assisted him by tying the wounds with cloth.

The businessman recounted that he later saw ‘Saw Man’ and asked who chopped Budhram. It was noted that Saw Man told him that Budhram also chopped him (Saw Man) and insulted his mother.

Samson also said that Budhram sat next to a truck and became motionless. As such, the businessman made contact with the Police and reported the matter.

Budhram was taken to the Mahdia District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The body is at the hospital’s mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Meanwhile, Police searched several shops, camps and worksites for the suspect but he has not yet been apprehended. Efforts were also made to contact the woman Budhram was with but she too has not yet been found.

Investigations are ongoing.
