Contractor rams bandit with car, retrieves gun to foil robbery at Success


A 21-year-old security guard was on Wednesday arrested by the Police shortly after he attempted to rob a 29-year-old contractor of his licensed firearm while he was at a Success, East Coast Demerara (ECD) restaurant.
Police Headquarters said the incident occurred at around 20:27hrs.
The contractor, a resident of Eccles, East Bank Demerara, was imbibing at the Classic Chinese Restaurant with his father and a group of friends.
According to a Police report, he was held at gunpoint by three men who rushed into the restaurant.
One of the suspects, was armed with a firearm. Police said they demanded that the victim hand over his valuables and cash.
A scuffle ensued over the contractor’s firearm during which one of the suspects was shot to his right leg, Police said.
“The suspects then ran out of the restaurant in a western direction with the victim’s firearm,” Police said.
They added, “the contractor gave chase in his vehicle behind the shot suspect, who had his (victim) firearm. The victim observed the injured suspect heading south on foot with his firearm, and he (victim) drove his vehicle into the suspect, causing him to receive further injuries”.
According to the Police, the contractor managed to retrieve his licensed 9MM pistol with 15 rounds.
The matter was reported to the Police and the injured suspect was subsequently arrested.
Police said he was identified as a 21-year-old security guard of ‘B’ Field, Sophia.
He was escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he was admitted as a patient under police guard.
Police said detectives retrieved CCTV footage which is being analysed as the investigation continues.
