The man who is accused of bludgeoning businessman Akbhar Sain of Williamsburg, Corentyne during the course of a robbery, was Friday charged with the capital offense of murder.

Satish Ramnaris called ‘Chico’ appeared before Magistrate Renita Singh at the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court and was not required to enter a plea.

The charge read that Ramnaris between Tuesday and Wednesday at Williamsburg, Corentyne, Berbice in the furtherance of a robbery, murdered Akbhar Sain of Williamsburg.

He was subsequently remanded to prison and will return to Court at the Albion Magistrate’s Court on November 7 2023.

Meanwhile, at the court, the accused’s wife, Bibi Shabena Azad told reporters “…right about now I’m kind of confused and me children really a study dem father. Me still can’t explain because we na short for nothing and he is a hardworking man, he works six days a week…the whole family never expected this from he…”

She stated that on the day of the incident, she heard the gunshot but never thought her husband would be involved.

They’ve been married for some 14 years.

Akbhar Sain, the proprietor of the Sain Supermarket at Williamsburg, Corentyne, Berbice was hit in the head during a scuffle with Satish Ramnaris when he broke into the supermarket Wednesday morning around 1:30 with the intention to rob.

The police were immediately called to the scene by neighbours after hearing the commotion and hearing the businessman call out for help and upon their arrival they noticed the grill work to the front entrance of the supermarket priced open along with the glass door.

Items in the shop were scattered on the ground and police eventually saw the body of the businessman in a pool of blood on the ground.

The businessman’s firearm was found on the countertop. It was during a search of the premises by the police in the upper flat of the building where the businessman resided that they confronted the accused, he was hiding behind a washing machine on the back veranda.

When the accused saw the police he made a run for it but the police fired a shot in his direction, hitting him on his right arm. He was subsequently apprehended and a search of his person unearthed money stashed in his pants crotch.

The suspect later confessed to killing the businessman during a scuffle in the supermarket. He told police he hit the man on his head with a piece of wood and he collapsed.

Meanwhile, a post-mortem examination conducted on the body of Akbhar Sain revealed that he died from shock and cerebral haemorrhage, multiple fractured skull and blunt trauma to the head. His body has since been handed over to relatives for burial.
