Kavita Singh, of Duncan Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, was on Friday released on $40,000 bail for allegedly breaking into her tenant’s home and stealing items valued at over $600,000.

Appearing before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, Singh pleaded not guilty to two charges brought against her.

The first charge alleged that on April 4, 2023, at Duncan Street, Singh unlawfully broke into Nadia Simmons’ dwelling house and made off with a flat-screen television, a microwave, $140,000 worth of jewellery, and $180,000 in cash, cumulatively valued over $600,000.

Another charge stated that on the same date at the same location, Singh unlawfully and maliciously damaged a chair valued at $85,000.

Regarding the break and enter and larceny charge, the defendant was granted bail in the amount of $40,000. She was also granted $20,000 bail in relation to the charge of damage to property.

The unrepresented woman told the court that Simmons had failed to pay rent for eight months and she initiated legal proceedings, which resulted in a Magistrate’s order for the outstanding rent to be paid.

Singh alleged that Simmons fabricated the charges against her in retaliation for pursuing legal action to recover the unpaid rent.

Illegally entering tenant’s apartment and stealing items are against the law. It is not a substitute
for unpaid rent or collecting valuables in lieu thereof, by breaking and entering.
Landlord must first notify the tenant in advance for effecting any repairs and the dates to do so.
Items missing during the repair is the landlord responsibility.
Tenants: ALWAYS TAKE PHOTOS OF VALUABLES IN YOUR APARTMENT, HOUSE, ETC. IN CASE SUCH AS THIS, OR ROBBERY…
