The Police in Berbice have re-arrested the fiancé of Ashmin Mahadeo, a 32-year-old woman who was shot in the neck on October 1, 2023, at her Williamsburg, Corentyne, Berbice house.
Regional Commander Shivpersaud Bacchus confirmed that Neil Madramootoo, an engineer attached to the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority, is in custody assisting the Police with the investigation.
Madramootoo was initially released on $300,000 station bail after the 72-hour period had elapsed for him to remain in Police custody; he was re-arrested this week based on the statement of an eyewitness that he shot Mahadeo.
The file has since been resent for legal advice and charges are expected to be laid on Monday.
At the time of the shooting, the couple was packing items in Madramootoo’s company vehicle to be taken to a location in Port Mourant where their bridal shower/reception was expected to take place.
Mahadeo was shot at around 07:30 hrs.
Her brother, Naresh Mahadeo, had told reporters that they were awakened by the loud noise and Madramootoo shouting in the house that the woman was shot.
While the family ran to her assistance, the fiancé remained inside the house for some time.
Mahadeo remains at the Georgetown Public Hospital in a serious condition.
Following the shooting, Police searched her house when they found a firearm concealed in the ceiling of her bedroom,
The fiancé had claimed that someone shot Mahadeo and escaped and that he found her at the gate in a pool of blood.
