    Olympian Aleka Persaud reset her national record in the 100m Butterfly

    Olympian Aleka Persaud produced another solid performance in the pool as she significantly lowered her national record in the 100m Butterfly at the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, on Sunday.

    Persaud won Heat 1 in a time of 1:05.75s to lower her record from 1.06.93s.

    Though rewriting Guyana’s record books, Persaud finished 25th overall.

    American Kelly Pash clocked 58.34 seconds to be the fastest qualifier of the 28 participants.

    On Monday, the 17-year-old competes in the 100m Freestyle from 09:00h, while the day after, she dives into the pool for the 50m Freestyle at 09:01h.

    Weightlifting

    Weightlifters Krystol Chanderban and Shammah Noel gave a valiant effort but was off par to be close to the medal weights.

    In the women’s 59kg, Chanderban had a total of 143 with a best Snatch at 65kg and Clean and Jerk at 78kg, to finish 13th.

    Record-breaking Colombian Fernanda Alvarez won the event with a total of 228 with a best snatch at 102kg and clean & jerk at 126kg.

    Similarly, in the Men’s 89kg, Noel finished 14th with a total of 245 as he had a best Snatch at 100kg and clean & jerk at 145kg.

    Giovanni Vallenilla won the event with a total of 383kg via a snatch of 172kg and clean & jerk at 211kg.

    Boxing

    Joel Williamson lost his 63.5kg bout via Unanimous Decision to Miguel De La Cruz of the Dominican Republic.

    The Judges had it 28-29, 27-30, 26-30, 27-30 and 27-30 in favour of De La Cruz.

    Olympian Keevin Allicock is now the last hope for a medal in boxing when he fights his quarter-final on Monday.
