Baby girl dies following Wismar fire

A one-year-old baby girl died on Tuesday night after she ran into a fire at Wismar, Linden.

Dead is Aziza Albert; Police Headquarters reported that the fire occurred at around 19:30 hrs.

It is alleged that the mother, 22-year-old Anika Hamy lived in the one-flat wooden structure with her 27-year-old husband and two daughters (one-year-old and two-year-old).

There was a curtain which separated the kitchen from the bedroom; while the children were playing in the living room, the mother went into the kitchen to fry eggs for their dinner.

She was cooking on a kerosene stove, resting on an old gas stove and as she was about to fry the eggs, the stove fell to the floor; simultaneously, the oil and the fire from the stove quickly spread across the floor.

The one-year-old child immediately ran towards her mother, and by doing so, she ran into the fire.

Police said the baby girl received severe burn injuries. However, Anika managed to take her two children out of the house for safety, and she immediately raised an alarm.

“A few neighbours formed a bucket brigade and attempted to out the fire, while the others stood and made video recordings with their cellphones,” the Police said.

Despite the efforts of the fire service, the wooden structure was completely destroyed.

Aziza was rushed to the Linden Hospital Complex, where she received medical attention for second and third-degree burns; she was later transferred to the Georgetown Hospital where she died at approximately 23:00 hrs.

The body was escorted back to Linden and is currently lying at the Pensioner’s Funeral Home, awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Thus us sad indeed. How could one come to grips with such trauma. My sympathy goes out to the family of that innocent baby. She has gone so soon . What a horrible way for a baby to meet her demise. May her young soul rest in peace
