The Sheriff Group of Companies on Friday held a ceremonial sod-turning ceremony to mark the start of construction of its $1.3 billion mall at Palmyra, Berbice.

Managing Director Ameir Ahamad said the mission of the company is to contribute to the growth and development of Guyana.

The project, he said, “holds tremendous promise and potential” and will be a mall “that will not only redefine the landscape of this community but also contribute to the economic prosperity of the region.”

Expected to provide thousands of employment opportunities for the region, the project will add to the transformation of the Palmyra site where other major projects are also expected to take shape in the near future.

“While we stand here on this ground we envision a state-of-the-art mall that will not only serve as a centre of commerce but also a hub for the community,” Ahamad said. The facility will house retail outlets, franchise outlets, a cinema, gaming zones and family-friendly attractions.

Region Six Chairman David Armogan, who spoke on behalf of President Irfaan Ali who could not be present, mentioned that it was not so long ago that the Palmyra area was merely canefields but “we are now transforming out of that”.

In applauding the venture by Sheriff Group, Armogan said that the new mall exemplifies the confidence investors have shown in the region with more and more persons expressing interest.

“…this area will be developed in a big way…I hope that other investors will follow you…” Armogan encouraged.

“It’s an extremely good investment and our region is developing at a very fast pace…” Armogan added.

Meanwhile, President of the Berbice Chamber of Commerce, Samantha Reid, in her remarks also commended the initiative, saying it will bring jobs and other opportunities for Berbicians.

“…people are hungry for development like these. As someone who has had the privilege to witness the transformation…I am excited,” she said.
