For the second time in a week, Guyana’s Lady Jags got the better of Suriname in Group A of League B of the Concacaf W Road to Gold Cup at the Dr. IR Franklin Essed Stadium in Paramaribo, Suriname.

Playing on Sunday evening, the Guyanese prevailed 1-0, just like they did on October 25 at the same venue.

Otesha Charles was the player on target for the Lady Jags, putting the finish on a free-kick service from Sydney Cummings in the 24th minute.

Suriname had a chance to go ahead in the ninth minute through Stekkinger Shamaira, while Katoucha Patra nearly equalised in the 31st, but Guyana goalkeeper Chante Sandiford made a crucial stop.

Suriname’s goalkeeper Mayra Tjin A Koeng kept Guyana from adding more in the 52nd minute with a stop on a free-kick.

Guyana’s Anya Tribune then tried from distance in the 69th minute, but her attempt went just outside of the left post, while Pique Naomi of Suriname had a final attempt in stoppage time, but the game would end with just a solitary goal.

Lady Jags remain top

With the win, their third in four games, the Lady Jags have solidified their position at the top of Group A of League B, three points clear of Suriname, who have six.

Antigua and Barbuda (4) and Dominica (4) complete the group.

Guyana’s last two matches in the group are against Dominica and Antigua and Barbuda on dates to be announced.

The Lady Jags opened their Road To Concacaf W Gold Cup campaign with a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Antigua and Barbuda on September 20. But the team bounced back in the second match dominating Dominica 5-1 to secure their first three points, before taking full points against Suriname.

The first-place finishers from each League B group, totalling three teams, will advance to the 2024 W Gold Cup Prelims.

The Road To Concacaf W Gold Cup has 34 registered senior women’s national teams. It is the qualifying tournament for the highly anticipated 2024 W Gold Cup, the top-tier competition for senior footballers in the Concacaf region.
