Scores of family and friends gathered on Wednesday for the homegoing service of Amit Singh, the 21-year-old who was brutally murdered and betrayed by a business associate one week ago.

It was an overwhelmingly emotional day for Singh’s family and friends who gathered at the family’s business premises located at Delph Street, Campbellville to pay their last respects to the young man who met an untimely death.

Relatives spent their last moments reflecting on his life before he was cremated at the Good Hope Crematorium along the East Coast of Demerara.

His cousins collectively paid tributes and read his eulogy and said Singh was a ‘ray of sunshine’ to their family.

“We once took it for granted that he would always be with us.

“You created in us a feeling of a warm ray of sunshine that comes after a stretch of cloudy, foggy days.”

One of the cousins reminded that Singh traveled with them and had supportive friends who, even in death, have stood beside his family.

“He was a social butterfly always acknowledging everyone. But what made him stand out the most was his ambition, his talents and that he acted upon every opportunity to learn something new,” she said.

The family said Singh was always filled with love and laughter. Though he was only 21, the family said he lived every day like it was his last but they would’ve wanted to see him grow old and spend time with future generations of their family.

“I know that I am thinking that the memories may one day fade and that the reality will step in that we will never ever again see that goofy grin of yours.

“Because like that firework that you were eventually fades and so will our memory… We would have loved to see what kind of old man you would have been a sassy one maybe.”

Singh was family oriented and enjoyed several recreational activities- traveling and bike riding- as well as assisting with the success of Singh’s family business – D. Singh Trading.

His father Shivnarine Singh, known as Vinod, said the friends whom he often teased his son about spending too much time with, have been a great support as the family mourns.

Singh’s funeral was held 24hrs after Yogeendra Sukhdeo, the prime suspect in the murder appeared before Chief Magistrate (ag), Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court where the charge of murder was read to him.

On October 24, Sukhdeo reportedly lured Singh to a family property at Middle Road, La Penitence, under the pretext that he had gold to sell.

Once there, he told detectives that, acting alone, he bludgeoned Singh to the head with a piece of wood and attempted to strangle him. He then wrapped Singh’s body in a sheet and locked the house before leaving with $7.7 million which Singh had on him to pay for the gold.

Hours later Singh’s battered body was found, Police arrested Sukhdeo.

A search was subsequently conducted at Sukhdeo’s 20th Avenue Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara house and the stolen cash was found in his bedroom.
