A self-employed man from Whim, Corentyne, Berbice, was arrested by the police after firecrackers were discovered in the trunk of his car on Monday.

He was later released on $20,000 station bail. The firecrackers were discovered when patrol ranks in Sheet Anchor, East Canje, Berbice, intercepted the man who was driving a silver motorcar (PNN 5837).

The ranks searched the vehicle after the man was observed acting suspiciously; they found boxes of squibs and firecrackers were found in the trunk.

The driver then said the items belonged to him and he was arrested.

Guyana’s laws impose significant fines, as high as G$97,000, with the possibility of jail time if people are found in possession of these apparatus.

According to the law, persons must obtain a license to sell explosives on a wholesale basis, but this license would only be granted if there is evidence of sufficient fireproof storage capacity.

Despite these regulations, the sale of fireworks and firecrackers continues, particularly during the Diwali and Christmas seasons.
