A 26-year-old driver, who is accused of carting off over $8M in cash from the Ogle, East Coast Demerara (ECD) office of India-based Ashoka Construction Company over the weekend, was on Tuesday charged and released on $400,000 bail.

Kevin Hopkinson of Burnham Drive, Wismar, Linden appeared before Magistrate Rushelle Liverpool at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, ECD.

The charge stated that on November 18, 2023, at Ogle, ECD, while being in the company of others and armed with a dangerous weapon, he robbed Rahul Dhing of $8M, property of Ashoka Buildcon Limited.

Hopkinson pleaded not guilty to the charge. Bail was granted on the condition that he lodges his passport and report to the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court once every week.

Hopkinson was represented by attorney Bernard DaSilva

The matter was adjourned to January 16, 2024 for report and disclosure.

The News Room understands that on the day in question, four men allegedly stormed the office and carted off with the cash before making good their escape.

The Police were informed and an investigation was launched.

The incident was captured on CCTV footage.

So far only Hopkinson was charged in relation to the robbery.
