Nationals 2023: Springer and Roberts are U-18 champion athletes

Tianna Springer wrapped her golden year with the Girls’ U-18 Champion athlete, while Javon Roberts copped the Boys’ award at the 61st National Schools’ Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships.

Springer, who soared for Guyana this year with gold in the 400m at the CARIFTA Games, South America U-20, Commonwealth Youth Games, and Inter-Guiana Games, was a tier above her peers at ‘Nationals’.

The District 11 (North Georgetown) athlete won six gold medals – 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 4x400m, 4x100m – and set new records in the 100m, 200m, 400m and 4x100m.

Tamara Harvey of District 4 and Shelena Semple of District 15 were other standout girls in the U-18.

Meanwhile, Roberts, who also won gold at the CARIFTA Games, copped gold in the 400m, 800m, 1500m and 4x400m while he got bronze in the 4x100m. He also managed to reset the 800m record.

Jonathan Richards of District 3 and Jaheme Henry of District 10 were the top performers in the U-18.

The impressive Athaleya Hinckson of District 12 won the Girls’ U-68 champion athlete with gold in the 100m, 200m, and Long Jump, while Kaidon Persaud of District 10 was the top U-16 boy.

Robert Marcus of District 12 topped the U-20 Boys, while the Girls’ award went to Shaneka Campbell and Naressa McPherson, who tied for 29 points.

Tisanna Harris of District 10 soared to 55 points to retain her champion tag for the U-12, while Jadon Bristol of District 4 was the top U-8 male athlete.

Charles Young of District 14 seized victory in the 400m Boys U10, breaking the existing record at 1:06.20s. The previous record, held by Jair Samuels of District 5, stood at 1:07.22s.

In the 400m Girls U8, Elliana Grant of District 7 emerged triumphant, setting a new record at 1:18.53 seconds and surpassing Jaynelle Semple of District 5’s previous record of 1:20.89 seconds.

Jadon Bristol secured his second gold on the track by winning the 400m Boys U8 finals.

District 10 won the overall title

The 4x100m Boys Relay Open witnessed a thrilling performance by District 3 (West Demerara), as they set a new record of 43.2s, beating District 5’s previous record of 43.32s set in 2017.

In the 4x100m Female Teachers Relay Open, District 10 showcased their prowess with a time of 57.08 seconds, surpassing the previous record of 57.93 seconds.

District 11 dominated the 4x100m Girls Open Relay, setting a swift pace of 49.4s and eclipsing District 3’s previous record of 50.39s.

Isaiah Trim of District 2 (Essequibo Coast, Pomeroon) dominated the High Jump Boys U20 Final 2023, clearing a height of 1.92m.

Trim also equaled the national record set by Tortque Boyce in 2017.

In the 100m Boys U18 final, Richards of District 3 set a new record of 10.46s while Nalicia Glen of District 4 set a new record in the 100m Girls U20 Final 2023, recording a time of 12.00s.

Angus Lynch of District 5 outperformed himself in the 100m Boys U20 Final 2023, breaking his 2022 record with a new mark of 10.57.

Babito Williams of District 10 made history in the 100m Boys U12 Final, becoming the first U-12 athlete in Guyana to run sub-13, setting a new record of 12.34.

Ovando Caesar of District 2 showcased his skills in the Teachers U-31 long jump, resetting the record to 6.49m, surpassing his record from 2022.

Meanwhile, District 10 (Upper Demerara/Kwakwani) stormed their way to the top as Champion of Champions 2023, winning gold in the track and field championships and silver in the cycling, swimming, and teacher’s championships to rest comfortably atop the standings with 71 points.

Upper Demerara/Kwakwani now boasts 20 overall Champion of Champions titles.

District 11 (North Georgetown) and District 13 (South Georgetown) tied for second with 55 points, while District 9 (Rupununi) got fourth with 50 points.

District 11 won swimming, while Cycling went to first-time entrants in District 9.

District 13 won its first teachers’ title since 2018.
