Failure to stop at intersection resulted in three-vehicle fatal accident – driver claims

The driver of the truck which was involved in the accident that claimed the life of former Guyana and West Indies off-spinner, Clyde Butts on Friday, is claiming that the now deceased failed to stop at the intersection of Eccles Industrial Site Road and First Access Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD).

This is according to a press release issued by the Guyana Police Force, which noted that the accident occurred at around 15:15 hrs.

At the time, Butts, 66, of Herstelling, EBD was the driver of motor car, PTT 66; Lloyd Gunraj, a 41-year-old of Bartica was driving motor lorry, GAC 7592 while Christopher Comacho, 22, of Lamaha and Waterloo Street, Georgetown was driving motor van, GAE 8844.

Police Headquarters said the truck was heading west along with southern lane and Gunraj claimed that as he was approaching First Access Road, he noticed Butts’ car heading north along the access road.

“The lorry driver said Butts failed to stop and proceeded on Eccles Industrial Site Road and ended up into his path,” Police Headquarters reported.

Gunraj told the Police that he pulled onto the northern lane to avoid a colliding with Butts when the front of the truck stuck the centre of the car.

Due to the impact, Butts’ car was pushed onto northern carriageway causing it to collide with the van.

All three vehicles sustained damages but only Butts received injuries. He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The other drivers were taken into custody and are said to be assisting with the investigation.
