Girl, 13, reportedly drowns in Barima River

Police are investigating the suspected drowning of 13-year-old Dellyssa Ramitt, a student of the North West Secondary school.

The incident occurred around 14:00hrs Thursday at the Kaituma River front, Barima River, North West District.

The News Room understands that at about 13:00hrs, Ramitt, her sister and her brother-in-law were heading to their farm.

They were in a wooden boat powered by a 75 Yamaha outboard engine which was captained by Jairam Samsundar.

The News Room understands that during the journey, waves from a passing boat caused Samsundar’s boat to tilt.

As a result, Ramitt, who was seated towards the bow of the boat fell into the river and drowned.

Efforts made to locate her body have so far proved unsuccessful.
