Petra Organisation has gotten significant support for its fourth KFC International Schools Under-18 Football tournament after President Dr. Irfaan Ali donated the first and second place prizes.
US$2,500 is for the first, while US$1,500 is for the second.
Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle presented the funds to the organisers on behalf of the President on Friday.
Ninvalle told the gathering the President accented to the request of the organisers and indicated this is another demonstration of the President’s mandate to support the development of sport.
“When the members of Petra reached out to him [President Irfaan Ali], he immediately offered to support, and I want the organisers to know that he stands ready to support again if so called upon,” the Director stated as he noted that the President is spearheading the drive to develop sport in Guyana.
Petra’s Co-Director, Troy Mendonca, expressed immense gratitude for the support of the President and noted this is a significant step in having the support of the highest office in Government for school football.
The final is between Jamaica’s Clarendon College and Trinidad’s St. Benedict’s College on Friday evening at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue, while Guyana’s Chase Academic Foundation and Suriname’s VWO-4 clash in the third-place playoff.
Third and fourth will be rewarded with US$1,000 and US$500, respectively.
Former champions D.C Caesar Fox Secondary (Waramadong), St. Ignatius Secondary, Bartica Secondary, and Carmel Secondary were the other participating teams in the tournament.
