Bandits rob Herstelling Chinese supermarket of $500k

Police are on the hunt for four armed bandits who stormed a Herstelling, East Bank Demerara (EBD) supermarket and carted off $500,000 cash.

The robbery occurred at about 20:46hrs Saturday at the Wen Jie Supermarket at Herstelling, EBD.

It was captured on CCTV cameras.

In the footage seen by News Room, one of the bandits who was armed with a handgun approached the cashier, a Chinese national, as he was attending to customers.

The bandit held the cashier at gunpoint and pulled him off the chair before grabbing the cash.

The three other suspects, all of whom were armed, then entered the supermarket and joined their accomplice.

After carrying out the robbery, the bandits escaped on foot.

During the process, two of the bandits allegedly shot at at Police, arriving on motorcycle, who were responding to a report of the robbery.

The ranks returned fire and one of the bandits is suspected to have been wounded.

The suspects escaped through the bushes at Farm, EBD.

Investigators are also reviewing the CCTV footage in a bid to identify the bandits and apprehend them.
