A Police Sergeant attached to Traffic Headquarters has been placed under close arrest after he Tuesday wounded a man who hurled a bottle – intended for a dog – at his car which was parked on Middle Road, Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara (WBD).
Phillips Adams, 47, of Middle Street, Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara sustained a single gunshot wound to his abdomen. He is currently admitted at the West Demerara Regional Hospital.
The incident occurred about 18:50hrs.
Information reaching the News Room revealed that Adams related to the Police that he was walking past Police Sergeant Shelwin Dowlin car when a dog started to chase after him.
As a result, Adams reportedly claimed that he armed himself with a bottle to pelt the dog but it missed and ended up hitting Dowlin’s car.
This caused Dowlin to rush to Adams and he whipped out what appeared to be a firearm.
Reports are that Dowlin discharged a round which struck Adams before he fled the scene.
Adams was rushed to hospital. His condition is listed as stable
The News Room understands that the Police were summoned and they contacted Dowlin.
He was told of the allegation and he denied having any knowledge of incident.
Dowlin was arrested and taken to the La Grange Police Station. He was placed under close arrest and is assisting with investigations.
Dowlin was allegedly found in possession of a .32 Taurus Pistol and two magazines with 30 live rounds.
The News Room was informed that the Sergeant is not a licensed firearm holder. He claimed that the firearm was issued to him by the Guyana Police Force.
As the investigation continues, Police said the firearm and ammunition were lodged for ballistic testing.
See ? Even the Police carry unlicensed guns in Guyana for protection.
But, this Sergeant is absolutely wrong to use that unlicensed gun to shoot a pedestrian,
since the Sergeant was not in any way threatened or feel so.
He should have used that gun to shoot the stray dog instead and protect a citizen from harm.
BUT, it’s all about his car and a stray bottle.
