Slingerz, Monedderlust to contest final of Elite League Promotional Playoff

Slingerz and Monedderlust football clubs are set to clash in the highly anticipated January 6, 2024, final of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League Promotional Playoff to secure a spot in the upcoming Elite League Season Six, which is scheduled to commence in February 2024.

In the December 29 semi-finals, Slingerz triumphed over Winners Connection 3-0, while Monedderlust secured their place in the final by defeating Beacon (Georgetown) 4-1 at the Eve Leary Sports Ground in Georgetown.

Winners Connection and Beacon (Georgetown) will compete for third position in the tournament.

Fans witnessed Simeon Moore’s exceptional skills for Slingerz as he scored the opening two goals at the 26th and 45+3-minute junctures.

Brian Wharrton sealed the deal with a stunning third goal during the 90+3 minutes, securing Slingerz’ path to the final showdown.

Meanwhile, in the second match of the evening, Monedderlust’s Kevin Cottoy set the tempo with a spectacular goal in the 32nd minute. However, Beacon’s Anthony Abrams responded swiftly, levelling the score with a goal in the 33rd minute.

A twist in fate came with Dominic Nelson’s unfortunate own goal in the 43rd minute, granting Monedderlust the lead. The momentum stayed with Monedderlust as Terrence Lowes struck a goal at the 53rd minute, followed by Tecon Delphs’ impressive contribution at the 83rd minute, solidifying Monedderlust’s convincing 4-1 victory.

The action-packed GFF Elite League Promotional Playoff kicked off on December 17, featuring nine triumphant teams from the Member Associations’ Leagues battling fiercely for a prized entry into the esteemed Elite League Season Six.

Participating clubs are Beacons (Bartica Football Association), Beacons (Georgetown Football Association), Buxton Stars (East Coast Demerara Football Association), Dartmouth (Essequibo/Pomeroon Football Association), Herstelling Raiders (East Bank Demerara Football Association), Monnederlust (Berbice Football Association), Slingerz (West Demerara Football Association), Tabatinga

(Rupununi Football Association), and Winners Connection (Upper Demerara Football Association).

GFF Competitions Director Troy Peters expressed gratitude to the participating teams and emphasised that the tournament is poised for an exhilarating conclusion in January 2024.

“Over the past few weeks, we’ve witnessed an incredible display of competitive football from our regional teams. Thank you to all the teams for giving fans another opportunity to experience the outstanding quality of club football. Anticipation mounts for the upcoming January final and third place game. The stage is set for an electrifying conclusion to this tournament.”
