Sonia Parag named new Minister of Local Gov’t 

Sonia Parag was named by President Dr. Irfaan Ali as the new Minister of Local Government and Regional Development.

The President made the announcement during an address, broadcast live on his Facebook page Tuesday night.

Parag served as the Minister of Public Service since Augsut 2020. She now joins Anand Persaud who has served as the Minister of Local Government and Regional Development within the Ministry and then moved up following the resignation of Nigel Dharamlall.

Parag’s transition to the new ministry, the President said, will take place “over the course of this week” and the two ministers will work on building a “robust community development programme” and implement “targeted initiatives” in the communities.

Meanwhile, the responsibilities of the Ministry of Public Service will now fall under the Finance Ministry.

“The portfolio of public service will come under the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh in the Office of the President,” the President explained.
