A miner was fatally stabbed to his chest, allegedly, by his friend while at a shop at Arimu Backdam, Cuyuni River, Region Seven on Tuesday.

The Guyana Police Force on Thursday identified the dead man as Jimmy Edward Ashby, 58, of Barima River, North West District.

According to information gathered by detectives, the suspect was only identified as ‘One Hand Loyde’.

The owner of the shop, who is familiar with both Ashby and the suspect, said the pair visited his shop regularly. He said at about 12:00 hrs on Tuesday, he was at the back cooking while Ashby and the suspect were consuming alcohol.

The two subsequently got into a heated argument and the businessman ventured to the front of the shop to enquire what had happened.

He said Ashby told him that the suspect stabbed him to his chest. Ashby reportedly told the businessman he was “okay” and did not want to go and seek medical attention.

Then at about 06:30 hrs on the following day, the businessman was on his way to make a call when he saw Ashby motionless on a bench alongside Arimu Trail. As a result, he called the Bartica Police Station and made a report.

On arrival, police ranks found Ashby’s body in a sitting position on a bench. A single stab wound was seen at the centre of his chest. Efforts are being made to locate the suspect.
