Police have arrested four men following the discovery and destruction of eight fields containing some 5,000 marijuana plants at Yarrowkabra, Soesdyke-Linden Highway on Monday.
In custody are: Fayon Reeves, 25, a farmer of Circuit Road, Timehri, East Bank Demerara; Kishore Ram, a 35-year-old labourer of Cumming’s Lodge; Munesh Ram, 29, also a labourer of Cumming’s Lodge and Miguel Gomes, a 21-year-old painter of Hyde Park, Timehri, EBD.
Police Headquarters said the discovery was made between 04:00 hrs and 11:30 hrs during an intelligence-led operation at Yarrowkabra backdam.
According to a Police report, a team of ranks supervised by an Assistant Superintendent from Special Branch went to the area where they discovered eight fields of cultivated marijuana. Eight camps were also at the location.
The plants ranged from two to three feet in height.
Police said one of the suspects, Gomes was initially spotted in one of the camps and he took the Police to the field where the marijuana was being planted.
All of the narcotics, as well as, the camps were destroyed.
“A nursery with a quantity of seedlings which amounted to approximately one thousand plants, was found and destroyed,” the Police said.
The Police further noted that a quantity of dried cannabis was also found in the camps where the three other suspects were arrested.
The dried narcotics amounted to 1700 grams. Police said the suspects remain in custody pending charges.
