A fire of unknown origin on Wednesday night destroyed a house at Four Miles Squatting Area, Bartica, Region Seven.

The unpainted wooden structure belonged to Julissa Roberts, 32, a housewife and Tavis Callender, 33, a miner, who lived there with their three children.

According to the Guyana Police Force, the fire reportedly started at about 21:00 hrs at the house that was powered by several solar panels.

The estimated value of the house is $4 million.

The owners of the house said they secured it at about 16:00 hrs earlier that day and went to Bartica with their children.

Later in the night, Callender received a call from his neighbours that his house, measuring 23 × 25 feet, was engulfed in flames.

Public-spirited persons made efforts to extinguish the fire but their efforts were futile. Eventually, Water tender #98 and Water Browser #11 from the Guyana Fire Service managed to extinguish the fire.
