Timehri man, 20, gets four years jail time after busted at ganja farm


Nishart Samsundar, 20, of Timehri North, East Bank Demerara was sentenced to four years imprisonment together with a fine of $1.7M on Wednesday for a trafficking offence and was also handed a four years sentence for cultivating the prohibited plant.
Samsundar appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Diamond Magistrate’s Court and pleaded guilty to both charges.
Both sentences are to run concurrently.
The man was arrested by ranks of the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) lasy Thursday during an eradication exercise at Hauraruni Village off the Soesdyke/Linden Highway.
During the exercise, about 200 cannabis plants and approximately 100 pounds of cannabis were destroyed and a 12-gauge cartridge was found.
He was arrested along Nazelena Alli, 33, also of Timehri North, East Bank Demerara.
A press release from CANU on the charges and jail time failed to mention the woman.
In the first press release, the Unit said its officers were conducting the exercise when they observed two camps, and a cannabis farm consisting of about 200 cannabis plants ranging from two feet to four feet and about 5,000 nursery cannabis plants.
The ranks further searched the camps and found approximately 100 pounds of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis and the 12-gauge cartridge.
