Faster processing of teachers’ promotions soon- Manickchand promises

More teachers are being trained but their positions are not readily upgraded; as a result, Education Minister Priya Manickchand said the local education authorities will process those promotions much faster in the coming days.

Teachers who aren’t trained may be a Temporary Qualified Mistress/Master (TQM) or a Temporary Unqualified Mistress/ Master (TUM).
Once trained, they are then promoted to a Trained Qualified Mistress/ Master.

Minister Manickchand acknowledged that the process of promoting or upgrading teachers once they are trained does not happen fast enough and she vowed that the local education authorities will fix this soon.

“That process (of upgrading teachers’ positions) used to take long when it was 200 teachers.

“We are now giving the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) and the School Board Secretariat 2,000 teachers and they haven’t yet grappled with how to do that quickly,” Manickchand noted.

She added, “So we have to change that and we will change that shortly.”

Manickchand gave his commitment on Friday during the consideration of the 2024 budget estimates.

A whopping $74 billion has been allocated directly to the Ministry of Education, while other sums for education delivery have gone to each of the 10 administrative regions.

Within that sum is a $3 billion allocation for training and other development purposes.
