Officials from the University of West Indies (UWI) are engaging the Government of Guyana to establish a School of Medicine in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).

“I am pleased to inform you that the University of the West Indies School of Medicine has now approached us to be part of this vision in bringing their campus here to Guyana,” President Dr Irfaan Ali announced on Sunday.

The Head of State made the revelation as he was speaking at the commissioning of the Pathology lab at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

According to President Ali, negotiations and discussions have commenced.

“We are talking to University of West Indies and the possibility of a School of Medicine now in Region Six,” President Ali said.

Once successful, President Ali said the campus will have the capacity to bring students from neighbouring Suriname here to pursue their studies.

The President further noted that efforts are being made to ensure that the rates will be the same as that offered to students of Trinidad and Tobago.

“In the negotiations we are now working on ensuring that the rates is the same as local students in Trinidad and Tobago so there would be equity and quality matched together,” President Ali noted.
